    Pandorabots scheduled maintenance

    Dear Pandorabots Users,

On July 16, 2010 at 7pm (PST) we will be performing maintenance on our free servers. While we hope to perform this maintenance in 8 hours or so, we may need up to 24 hours to complete the maintenance.

The maintenance is intended to address several of the unresolved server performance issues.

We will be transferring the mailing lists to a new service at this time as well. The details will be posted afterward.

In an earlier letter we described discovering inexplicable software problems leading to some deleted files. We believe we identified the causes of these problems, and we are currently modifying our backup software, and expect to finish these modification when we restart the free server after performing the maintenance. For complete safety, we strongly urge each of you back up your pandorabot files to your own machines by following these instructions:

Under the AIML tab, look at the AIML files. Some of the files may be library files and some may be custom "local" AIML files that you created. You do not need to back up library files. You only need to save a copy of the local files that you created. Pay special attention to the file called "update.aiml". This is where Pandorabots places any categories created with the Training Interface. Use the Download link to save a copy of each AIML file to your own computer.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience our pending maintenance procedure may cause you.

    AIML Superbot 2.1

The ALICE A.I. Foundation has released an upgrade to the AIML Superbot, our development kit that makes it easy for you to create a chat bot with its own unique and proprietary personality distinct from the ALICE bot.

The AIML Superbot uses the top 10,000 most activated patterns from the ALICE brain to create a blank template for a bot. By filling in the responses one by one, you can build up a unique personality of your own design.

If you do not with to write your own responses, the AIML Superbot also includes the original responses from the free ALICE bot. You can also mix and match and create a bot that blends your responses with ALICE's.

The Superbot 2.1 includes several refinements:

    • Improved documentation
    • Simplified basic personality profile patterns (AGE, NAME, GENDER...)
    • Sample starter bot
    • Pattern activation rank and frequency data
    • Created using the latest version of ALICE Showcase Edition

Purchase the Superbot development kit today for $999. For more info see http://alicebot.org/superbot.html

Discounts available for youth, seniors, students, disabled, non-profits and hobbyists.

    Update on Server Problems

    As reported on April 12:

As-yet unexplained errors occurred on the free Pandorabots server (located at www.pandorabots.com) during the first week of April. Only the free server was affected, and our other (paid) pandorabots servers were not affected by the errors. Only some users are affected, and we are unsure how many were affected. Some users have reported bot files missing, and we've verified these files were deleted by some unknown process. With some work, we've also independently identified some users with missing files who have yet to notice they are missing.

We asked those of you with deleted files to send us a report telling us which files were lost and for which bots, and thankfully, so far, we have been able to recover all the reported lost files. We are unsure how many files are still missing, and some of you have simply remained unaware you are missing files.

However, the cause of the server problems still remains unresolved. Until we resolve this problem we can only offer the following work around of backing up your files.

For this reason, we continue to recommend that botmasters always take the precaution of backing up their AIML files. You can back up your files by following these simple directions:

Under the AIML tab, look at the AIML files. Some of the files may be library files and some may be custom "local" AIML files that you created. You do not need to back up library files. You only need to save a copy of the local files that you created. Pay special attention to the file called "update.aiml". This is where Pandorabots places any categories created with the Trian interface. Use the Download link to save a copy of each AIML file to your own computer.

    Reporting Lost Files:

We may be able to recover any remaining missing the files from earlier backups, and if we are to do so successfully, we will need those of you with missing files to send us a message including your name, pandorabots user name (which is generally the same as your email address) and name and botid's of any of your bots that you suspect are missing any files. (To find the botid, look at your bot's published link. For example the ALICE bot located at URL http://www.pandorabots.com/pandora/talk?botid=f5d922d97e345aa1 has a botid f5d922d97e345aa1). We lack resources for automatically discovering the users with missing files, so we are asking users to determine if they are missing files, and report the associated botids to us.

You may contact us by sending e-mail (ideally) to drwallace@pandorabots.com, or by calling +1-609-379-2552.

We are very sorry for the trouble we've caused you. We will provide an update letter when we identify the cause of the problems.

  • [April 12, 2010]

    Dear Pandorabots Users,

We are very sorry to report to you that some of our users discovered that their bot files were deleted recently.

We do have a back up system in place on the free server, but unfortunately the backup occurred after the missing files were deleted. We may be able to recover some of the files from earlier backups, and if we are to do so successfully, we will need those of you with missing files to send us a message including your name, pandorabots user name (which is generally the same as your email address) and name and botid's of any of your bots that you suspect are missing any files.

At the moment, we have yet to identify the cause of the deletions, and we've been unable to determine how many users are affected. The free pandorabots server has been running for 8 years without encountering missing file problems, and we are working hard to identify the causes of these deletions, and how we might prevent these in the future. Until we identify the causes of the problem we strongly suggest that each of you back up your bot files to your own machines by following these instructions:

Under the AIML tab, look at the AIML files. Some of the files may be library files and some may be custom "local" AIML files that you created. You do not need to back up library files. You only need to save a copy of the local files that you created. Pay special attention to the file called "update.aiml". This is where Pandorabots places any categories created with the Trian interface. Use the Download link to save a copy of each AIML file to your own computer.

You may contact us by sending e-mail (ideally) to drwallace@pandorabots.com, or by calling 609-379-2552.

We are very sorry for the trouble we've caused you. We will provide an update letter when we identify the cause of the problems.

The next time you make a friend in the online community Smallworlds, it could turn out to be a Pandorabot.

Smallworlds is a fast-growing online virtual world that runs in a browser instead of requiring you to download a graphics-intensive application. Members of Smallworlds create avatars and use these to have shared experiences like chatting, watching videos, playing games, or listening to music.

Pandorabots is a chat bot hosting service. From any browser, you may create and publish your own bots for web pages, instant messenger services, virtual worlds and many other places. Pandorabots utilizes a patented memory management algorithm that scales in number of bots, amount of bot knowledge, and number of conversational interactions. The bots are based on AIML and spring entirely from the work of the A.L.I.C.E. and AIML free software community.

Pandorabots offers a unique experience for members Smallworlds. One of the first bots deployed there is named Shelley, who works in the Smallwear virtual store. Shelley can provide useful information about products for sale in the store. But also, Smallworlds members enjoy having silly conversations with the robot, just to see what she will say. You’ll often find a crowd around Shelley as groups of people all try talking to her at once.

Virtual currency in Smallworlds is called Gold. Smallworlds offers many different ways for participants to get Gold. One fun aspect of Smallworlds is exploring it to look for new ways to earn Gold. People will engage Shelley in conversations asking if she can give them Gold. Can Shelly give you Gold? Just keep talking to her and maybe you will find out!

  • [October 7, 2009] Pandorabots Announces the Availability of Bespoke Pandorabots SpellBinderTM Service

Pandorabots, Inc. is announcing a significant advance in the state of the art of chat bots based on artificial intelligence.

Previously the construction of believable characters based on artificial intelligence required hand-crafting thousands of sentences - aimed at creating a high-quality chat bot brain. A few creative people took up the challenge and authored some of the best chat bots around today. Until now, the tedious and expensive process of developing and training a high-quality believable chat bot remained a significant hurdle to widespread chat bot adoption.

The new, patent-pending Pandorabots SpellBinderTM technology reduces chat bot creation time enormously. Pandorabots SpellBinder automatically learns from conversational transcripts. Nothing else on the market today can create high-quality and unique chat bot characters as quickly and efficiently as Pandorabots SpellBinder (Synthetic PErsonality Language Learning for Bot Intelligence from Natural Dialog Example Recordings).

Have you ever wanted to create your own totally unique custom bot character, as smart as ALICE, but with a completely different personality? Where do you start? It took us over ten years to build up the contents of the ALICE brain, but now your creative team can do it in about two weeks. We've put together a bot brain with blank templates. You fill in the answers.

The ALICE A. I. Foundation is offering a completely upgraded product, the Superbot 2.0, that helps you create a totally unique custom bot personality for your web site or application. The Superbot 2.0 offers you the following:

    1. Top 10K AIML Categories with blank responses: We've created an AIML set with input patterns and blank responses. Use this AIML set if you want to create a totally custom bot from scratch.
    2. 20K Safe AIML Reductions: AIML uses "reductions" to divide up and simplify inputs, and to link synonyms together. The "Safe" AIML reductions are designed to work with any bot. The Safe AIML Reductions save you from having to write thousands of AIML catgeories.
    3. Top 10K AIML Categories with ALICE responses: The Top 10K most activated AIML categories with the original ALICE bot responses. This set can be modified easily to quickly create a new bot personality.
    4. Top 10K AIML Categories split into "Atomic", "Wild" and "Reductions": "Atomic" categories are ones with no wild cards in the patterns, and no reductions in the response. "Wild" categories are ones with one or more wildcards in the pattern, and no reductions in the response. "Reduction" categories are all the ones with AIML reductions. This set helps you divide up the work of creating your custom chat bot.
    5. Free Riot Software SAE AIML Spreadsheet Editor: The Simple AIML Editor is a spreadsheet-oriented AIML editor for Windows that provides all the capabilities you need to create your bot with the Superbot AIML files.
The Superbot 2.0 is available now for $999.

"an interesting resource...a decent value for such data."--Andrew Stren, Grand Text Auto

    http://Www.AliceBot.Org/superbot.html

The Superbot 2.0 is also available as an upgrade for earlier versions of the Superbot for only $199, if you previously purchased the Superbot-10K from the ALICE A.I. Foundation.

  • [May 31, 2009] We've noticed a small number of botmasters sometimes create bots that take up a lot of resources on our free server. Activity on our server indicates that these bot may be connected to other automated bot scripts and they use up resources at a rapid rate.

Automated bot spamming of our website is not only a violation of our Terms of Service, but also inconsiderate of all the other botmasters who are trying to use the same server for their projects. Pandorabots has thousands of botmasters trying to do legitimate business and hobby projects that make use of the resources we provide on our free server.

  • [May 31, 2009] We now offer a monthly subscription service to a shared hosting service that you can use for high traffic bots. For a small fee you can host a bot with up to 50,000 interactions per day. To sign up for this bot hosting service, please visit: http://bandore.pandorabots.com/subscription/index.html.
  • What's New 2008?

    • [December 19, 2008] Pandorarbots service will be interrupted from 12/20 4:00am till 6:00pm PST tomorrow Dec. 20 due to our network reconfiguration. Sorry for short notice....
    • [August 8, 2008] The ALICE bot was selected as a finalist for the Loebner Prize 2008, a real-world Turing Test. You too can create a bot like ALICE with the Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) on Pandorabots -- it's easy and free. Mastering AIML is not difficult. If you want to learn more, read Be Your Own Botmaster to learn how to create your own chat bot and even make money with it!

    What's New 2007?

    • [November 24, 2007] We fixed a long standing bug in our system. Log in to Pandorabots and select one of your bots. For example, if you have a bot named ALICE, choose ALICE from the list of My Pandorabots. Then navigate to the AIML section. You now see a web page called ALICE >> AIML files. Pandorabots organizes the AIML files in a table. The second column is called Categories. Previously, the data in the Categories column was all zero. The bug fixed, Pandorabots now correctly displays the number of AIML categories in each file.
    • [October 12, 2007] Our building will be undergoing a complete electrical shutdown on Saturday, October 13 (starting around 2am PST). We will be shutting down equipment on Friday, Oct 12 before end of day. If everything goes according to schedule, we'll be able to turn equipment back on Sunday morning. The Pandorabots server will not be available during the scheduled downtime.
    • [August 20, 2007] Pandorabots will be down today, August 20, 2007, from 1:30PM PST to 3:00PM PST for a hardware upgrade. We apologize for any inconvenience.
    • [August 7, 2007] This version of the Pandorabots server has been running since 2004, inheriting all the data from a previous version online since 2002. There is a huge amount of custom AIML loaded, a gigantic database of conversation logs, at the same time as unprecedented botmaster demand. Please be patient, we are in the midst of a hardware upgrade. The overall system performance has improved after careful performance analysis. We have isolated the slowest performance time to 10:00pm-2:00am PST. If you can schedule your work on Pandorabots outside that critical time, you may experience better performance.
    • [July 26, 2007] The Pandorabots server will be down for maintenance. The Pandorabots service will not be available from 0:00am-2:00am PST on July 27.
    • [March 8, 2007] We fixed a bug in the way Pandorabots processes the AIML <that/> tag. Previously, the template-side <that/> tag returned the entire previous input, even if consisted of multiple sentences. In other words, <that/> was performing like <that index="1,*"/>. Now we have the expected behavior <that/> = <that index="1"/>, and it returns a single sentence. This bug fix in no way affects the behavior of the pattern-side <that>...</that> tag pair. For more information on Pandorabots AIML tags, check out the Pandorabots AIML Tag Set document on alicebot.org.
    • [Jan 19th 2007] HostABot.com is now known as the Media Semantics Character Hosting. service. Built using the Character Server product running on commodity servers, the Character Hosting service provides many of the features of the company's desktop and server-based products, in a convenient hosted package. The resulting Flash applications reside on Media Semantics' servers, but appear on your web site.
    • [Jan 3rd 2007] Pandorabots served its 400 millionth response today. 95,000 botmasters have signed up to define 116,000 individual bots. And Pandorabots has recorded more than 6 million conversations with clients.

    What's New 2006?

    • [March 7th 2006] Pandorabots needs consultants. We have been contacted by a number of prospects and clients interested in AIML and Lisp customization work. If you are interested and have experience either as an AIML botmaster or a Lisp programmer, please send your resume to info (at) pandorabots.com.
    • [March 7th 2006] Record usage, ups and downs. Pandorabots has nearly 100,000 bots now hosted on one server, nearly six million conversation logs, and almost 300,000,000 individual responses served. Some recent server slowdowns have occurred due to simultaneous high activity of several of the bots on our Most Active list. On a few occasions the disk partitions allocated to accumulate log files have overflowed, causing a total shutdown, and we are working to resolve this problem. Thanks to everyone who reported any server problems as they arose; we try to respond to them as quickly as we can.

    What's New 2005?

    • [September 17th 2005] Pandorabots has been successfully migrated to the new server. While the downtime of the botmaster UI was longer than anticipated, the bots were available for chat throughout the process. The conversation logs for the migration period will be available soon.
    • [September 14th 2005] IMPORTANT NOTICE: We will be migrating the Pandorabots service onto upgraded hardware this Friday, September 16th. The service will be unavailable for up to 2 hours starting 4pm PDT (23:00 UTC).
    • [September 13th 2005] All the old conversation logs have been successfully recovered and are on-line. A database corruption of the conversations logs occurred last night around 10.45pm PDT. This resulted in the Pandorabots botmaster interface being unavailable till around 10am PDT this morning. Access to the botmaster interface has been restored and now all the conversations from 09/12 10.45pm PDT onwards are available. We are in the process of trying to repair the old logs and bring them back on-line.
    • [August 19th 2005] It appears that the “TOC” service used to publish chatbots on AOL Instant Messenger has changed in some way resulting in the Pandorabots AOL IM feature not working. We are attempting to follow up with AOL to establish the status of this service. In the meantime publishing chatbots on AOL Instant Messenger is no longer supported.
    • [August 6th 2005] Over the last couple of days, there was a problem creating new accounts. This has been fixed. If you experienced difficulties please try again.
    • [June 19th 2005] Doubly Aimless is out on vacation until July 18th and will not be replying to support email during that period. For urgent or commercial inquiries, please contact Evan Lessmore at lessmore@pandorabots.com.
    • [May 18th 2005] Pandorabots was down between 1:15 and 2:00 PM PDT today due to a power outage.
    • [February 17th 2005] You can now select from 47 different voices in 10 languages for your Oddcast VHost chatbot. To publish a chatbot with an Oddcast VHost face: login, select one of your bots, and click on “Oddcast VHost” in the navigation bar. In addition, Oddcast VHost faces will now speak on all Flash-enabled browsers irrespective of platform.
    • [February 17th 2005] Earlier this month, Pandorabots served its 100 millionth response! The chatbot was (not surprisingly) A.L.I.C.E and the customer was chatting from Lisbon, Portugal. In order that such momentous occasions don't slip by un-noticed in the future, we've added a running total of the number of conversation responses Pandorabots has served to the top of each page. Enjoy.
    • [January 4th 2005] Over the last few days pathological AIML in one of the chatbots resulted in excessive server resource usage causing a partial denial of service for other chatbots hosted at Pandorabots. The underlying problem that allowed this to happen has been fixed.

    What's New 2004?

    • [December 6th] Take a look at Pandorabots Embrace & Extend - a free sample section from Dr. Richard S Wallace's highly acclaimed book - Be Your Own Botmaster, 2nd Edition. Aimed at Pandorabots Botmasters of all levels, this book contains dozens of tips and techniques you won't find anywhere else.
    • [December 2nd] We're experiencing some on-going problems with AOL IM connectivity. There appear to be some new limitations on how many connections Pandorabots can have open to AOL's servers. Users may see the message Failed to Connect to a tocserver when signing on to AIM. We are looking into ways to resolve this.
    • [October 10th] If you've recently received a bounced message on sending mail to info@pandorabots.com, please re-send the message. The mail problems we were recently experiencing have now been resolved.
    • Congratulations to Dr. Richard Wallace and the A.L.I.C.E AI Foundation for winning the 2004 Loebner Prize Contest with A.L.I.C.E. Silver Edition!
    • Some of you may have noticed that the Pandora's Box Forum is down. The folks at Lexicalgas (who host the forum) are aware of the problem and are working on bringing the site back up.
    • It's now possible to train directly from the Targets page (saving you some cutting and pasting); and training from conversation logs now sets <that> and <topic> too. In both cases, to see the captured <that> and <topic> click on Advanced Alter Response from the Training page.
    • You can now publish your bot using a Media Semantics Character Toolkit animated Flash character. To try out this new feature, simply login, create a Pandorabot, and click on Media Semantics.
    • The tutorial has been updated and integrated into the main site. Many corrections have been made and it now corresponds more closely to the current state of the user interface. As it is now fully integrated into the site, our translators will be able to more easily translate it. Enjoy.
    • Thanks to Silas Lima for translating the site to Portuguese!
