What's New?
[December 19, 2008]
Pandorarbots service will be interrupted from 12/20 4:00am till 6:00pm PST tomorrow Dec. 20 due to our network reconfiguration.
Sorry for short notice....
[August 8, 2008]
The ALICE bot was selected as a finalist for the Loebner Prize 2008, a real-world Turing Test.
You too can create a bot like ALICE with the Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) on Pandorabots -- it's easy and free.
Mastering AIML is not difficult.

[November 24, 2007]
We fixed a long standing bug in our system. Log in to Pandorabots and select one of your bots. For example, if you have a bot named ALICE, choose ALICE from the list of My Pandorabots. Then navigate to the AIML section. You now see a web page called ALICE >> AIML files. Pandorabots organizes the AIML files in a table. The second column is called Categories. Previously, the data in the Categories column was all zero. The bug fixed, Pandorabots now correctly displays the number of AIML categories in each file.
[October 12, 2007] Our building will be undergoing a complete electrical shutdown on
Saturday, October 13 (starting around 2am PST).
We will be shutting down equipment
on Friday, Oct 12 before end of day. If everything goes according to
schedule, we'll be able to turn equipment back on Sunday morning.
The Pandorabots server will not be available during the scheduled downtime.
[August 20, 2007]
Pandorabots will be down today, August 20, 2007, from 1:30PM PST to 3:00PM PST for a hardware upgrade. We apologize for any inconvenience.
[August 7, 2007]
This version of the Pandorabots server has been running since 2004, inheriting
all the data from a previous version online since 2002. There is a huge amount
of custom AIML loaded, a gigantic database of conversation logs, at the same
time as unprecedented botmaster demand. Please be patient, we are in the
midst of a hardware upgrade. The overall system performance has improved
after careful performance analysis. We have isolated the slowest performance
time to 10:00pm-2:00am PST. If you can schedule your work on Pandorabots outside
that critical time, you may experience better performance.
[July 26, 2007]
The Pandorabots server will be down for maintenance. The Pandorabots service will not be available from 0:00am-2:00am PST on July 27.
[March 8, 2007]
We fixed a bug in the way Pandorabots processes the AIML <that/> tag. Previously,
the template-side <that/> tag returned the entire previous input, even if consisted of
multiple sentences. In other words, <that/> was performing like <that index="1,*"/>. Now
we have the expected behavior <that/> = <that index="1"/>, and it returns a single
sentence. This bug fix in no way affects the behavior of the pattern-side
<that>...</that> tag pair.
For more information on Pandorabots AIML tags, check out the
Pandorabots AIML Tag Set document

HostABot.com is now known as the Media Semantics Character Hosting.
service. Built using the Character Server product running on commodity
servers, the Character Hosting service provides many of the features of
the company's desktop and server-based products, in a convenient
hosted package. The resulting Flash applications reside on Media Semantics'
servers,
but appear on your web site.
[Jan 3rd 2007]
Pandorabots served its 400 millionth response today. 95,000
botmasters have signed up to define 116,000 individual bots. And
Pandorabots has recorded more than 6 million conversations with
clients.
What's New 2006?
[March 7th 2006]
Pandorabots needs consultants. We have been contacted by a number of prospects and clients interested in AIML and Lisp customization work.
If you are interested and have experience either as an AIML botmaster or a Lisp programmer, please send your resume to info (at) pandorabots.com.
[March 7th 2006]
Record usage, ups and downs. Pandorabots has nearly 100,000 bots now hosted on
one server, nearly six million conversation logs, and almost 300,000,000 individual responses served. Some recent server slowdowns have occurred due to simultaneous high activity of several of the bots on our
Most Active list.
On a few occasions the disk partitions allocated to accumulate log files have overflowed, causing a total shutdown, and we are working to resolve this problem. Thanks to everyone who reported any server problems as they arose; we try to respond to them as quickly as we can.
What's New 2005?
[September 17th 2005]
Pandorabots has been successfully migrated to the new server. While the downtime of the botmaster UI was longer than anticipated, the bots were available for chat throughout the process. The conversation logs for the migration period will be available soon.
[September 14th 2005]
IMPORTANT NOTICE: We will be migrating the Pandorabots service onto upgraded hardware this Friday, September 16th. The service will be unavailable for up to 2 hours starting 4pm PDT (23:00 UTC).
[September 13th 2005]
All the old conversation logs have been successfully recovered and are on-line.
A database corruption of the conversations logs occurred last night around 10.45pm PDT. This resulted in the Pandorabots botmaster interface being unavailable till around 10am PDT this morning. Access to the botmaster interface has been restored and now all the conversations from 09/12 10.45pm PDT onwards are available. We are in the process of trying to repair the old logs and bring them back on-line.
[August 19th 2005]
It appears that the “TOC” service used to publish chatbots on AOL Instant Messenger has changed in some way resulting in the Pandorabots AOL IM feature not working. We are attempting to follow up with AOL to establish the status of this service. In the meantime publishing chatbots on AOL Instant Messenger is no longer supported.
[August 6th 2005]
Over the last couple of days, there was a problem creating new accounts. This has been fixed. If you experienced difficulties please try again.
[June 19th 2005]
Doubly Aimless is out on vacation until July 18th and will not be replying to support email during that period. For urgent or commercial inquiries, please contact Evan Lessmore at lessmore@pandorabots.com.
[May 18th 2005]
Pandorabots was down between 1:15 and 2:00 PM PDT today due to a power outage.
[February 17th 2005]
You can now select from 47 different voices in 10 languages for your Oddcast VHost chatbot. To publish a chatbot with an Oddcast VHost face: login, select one of your bots, and click on “Oddcast VHost” in the navigation bar. In addition, Oddcast VHost faces will now speak on all Flash-enabled browsers irrespective of platform.
[February 17th 2005]
Earlier this month, Pandorabots served its 100 millionth response! The chatbot was (not surprisingly)
A.L.I.C.E and the customer
was chatting from Lisbon, Portugal. In order that such momentous occasions don't slip by
un-noticed in the future, we've added a running total of the number of conversation responses
Pandorabots has served to the top of each page. Enjoy.
[January 4th 2005]
Over the last few days pathological AIML in one of the chatbots resulted in excessive server resource usage causing a partial denial of service for other chatbots hosted at Pandorabots. The underlying problem that allowed this to happen has been fixed.
What's New 2004?
[December 6th] Take a look at Pandorabots Embrace & Extend - a free sample section from Dr. Richard S Wallace's highly acclaimed book - Be Your Own Botmaster, 2nd Edition. Aimed at Pandorabots Botmasters of all levels, this book contains dozens of tips and techniques you won't find anywhere else.
[December 2nd] We're experiencing some on-going problems with AOL IM connectivity. There appear to be some new limitations on how many connections Pandorabots can have open to AOL's servers. Users may see the message Failed to Connect to a tocserver when signing on to AIM. We are looking into ways to resolve this.
[October 10th] If you've recently received a bounced message on sending mail to info@pandorabots.com, please re-send the message. The mail problems we were recently experiencing have now been resolved.
Some of you may have noticed that the Pandora's Box Forum is down. The folks at Lexicalgas (who host the forum)
are aware of the problem and are working on bringing the site back up.
It's now possible to train directly from the Targets page (saving you some cutting and pasting);
and training from conversation logs now sets <that>
and <topic> too. In both cases, to see the captured <that> and <topic> click on
Advanced Alter Response from the Training page.
You can now publish your bot using a Media Semantics Character Toolkit animated Flash character.
To try out this new feature, simply login, create a Pandorabot,
and click on Media Semantics.
The tutorial has been updated and
integrated into the main site. Many corrections have been made and it
now corresponds more closely to the current state of the user
interface. As it is now fully integrated into the site, our
translators will be able to more easily translate it. Enjoy.
Thanks to Silas Lima for translating the site to Portuguese!
